New Moderators – Fall 2009

A few weeks ago we sent out an appeal for new moderators or co-moderators for our Fall 2009 calendar. We’ve had some good responses, and as a result we have people interested in running the following courses:

Latin America: a comparatively ignored area of the world except in a crisis.

Advertising: could look at the psychology of it, the techniques, whatever.

The Arctic: do you know enough to be able to help us discover more?

Murders that Changed History: from Julius Caesar through to Benazir Bhutto. So many to research and discuss.

In each of these four cases, we’re looking for someone else (you?) who would work as a co-moderator with the person who’s already volunteered. So, if any of these topics catches your interest, this is your chance to get involved.

In addition, there are lots of other suggested topics still looking for moderators. Read through the suggestions below, and see if there’s something there that catches your fancy.

Medieval History: a topic most of us know little about; you and your class could learn together.

Afghanistan: lots of news items almost every day – could you help others to acquire more background?

Jerusalem: a perennial topic of interest in all its aspects.

50 or 100 Years Ago: what was life like then? How have things changed / stayed the same?

Women Who’ve Made a Difference in Canada: a good study group topic. There are many women who could be included.

Or how about these?

Astronomy
Toronto
Great Canadians
Africa
Dead Sea Scrolls
Tutenkhamen / Egypt
Challenges of the 21st Century
Canada & Immigration
Pirates and Piracy
Canadian Literature
The Former Yugoslavia
Financial Collapse - the Villains

Many of these would work well as study groups with class members doing much of the research and presentations. But we need moderators or, even better, co-moderators (2 or 3) for each course. Co-moderating makes the experience even more enjoyable and more relaxing.

The moderators are the ones who do the initial planning and organization for each course between now and late September – that’s 3 whole months to get ready! So, how about YOU? Can you help us out? Can you challenge yourself? Are you ready for a great experience?

Of course, if you have any other idea or ideas of your own which you’d like to pursue, that’s fine with us.

So, if you’re interested and/or have any questions, contact me this week, and I’ll be glad to give or get you all the help you need. Remember that there’s lots of time between now and late September to do the work. And you’ll learn so much in the process.

Thanks, Simon Pearson

SILVER SCREENS ADDITION

A Woman’s Tale (1991)

A Special Film Screening – This marvellous life-affirming film is one of Australian director Paul Cox’s best.

‘A Woman’s Tale does not sentimentalize its heroine, does not make her cute or lovable or pull any of those other tricks we use to deny the realities of old age. It allows her strong opinions and a skeptical irony, and makes her into one of the great characters of recent movies.’ (Roger Ebert)

Dr. Paula David, noted gerontologist, will speak to the topic ‘Women and Aging: Reclaiming Ourselves. ’ Dr. David currently teaches at the University of Toronto and has worked with women at Baycrest Geriatric Centre.

Heaslip House, 7th floor,

Peter Bronfman Learning Centre,

297 Victoria Street
Tuesday, June 2, 2009 7:00 p.m.

Admission is included in a Film Pass or $10.00.

For more information or to order tickets please call Mena Carravetta 416 979.5103

LIFE Fall 2009 Calendar

Hi all.
Here we go again.

Our spring courses have just started, and here we are talking about the Fall calendar – and we’re also thinking about the Winter one. That’s how it works at LIFE! We’ve produced a list of courses that we'd like to run this fall or winter. Many would work well as study groups with class members doing much of the research and presentations. But we need moderators or, even better, co-moderators (2 or 3) for each course. Co-moderating makes the experience even more enjoyable and more relaxing.

The moderators do the planning and organization for each course between now and late September - that's more than 4 1/2 months to get ready! So, how about YOU? Can you help us out? Can you challenge yourself? Are you ready for a great experience? Read through the suggestions below, and see if there's something there that catches your fancy. Here is our current wish list:Latin America: a comparatively ignored area of the world except in a crisis.

Astronomy: anyone out there with enough knowledge to lead a course?

Comparative Religions: could look at 2 or 3 biggies, or explore more widely.

Toronto: any aspects of its history, culture, society, politics.

Great Canadians: could be done in a number of ways.

Africa: again, many aspects to be explored.

Advertising: could look at the psychology of it, the techniques, whatever.

Medieval History: a topic most of us know little about; you and your class could learn together.

Afghanistan: lots of news items almost every day – could you help others to acquire more background?

Dead Sea Scrolls: big exhibition coming up – maybe a course to tie in?

Tutenkhamen / Egypt: see Dead Sea Scrolls.

Food: a giant topic – could be narrowed down to the history of food, the politics of food, the _______ (fill in the blank) of food.

Challenges of the 21st Century: lots of opportunity for research and thinking.

Jerusalem: a perennial topic of interest in all its aspects.

Terrorism: another biggie, with lots of approaches from which to choose.

Canada & Immigration: we love to talk about this – but how much do we know?

The Arctic: do you know enough to be able to help us discover more?

Pirates and Piracy: can’t get much more topical!

Canadian Literature: again a giant topic – pick your own aspect!

50 or 100 Years Ago: what was life like then? How have things changed / stayed the same?

Women Who’ve Made a Difference in Canada: a good study group topic. There are many women who could be included.

Murders that Changed History: from Julius Caesar through to Benazir Bhutto. So many to research and discuss.

The Former Yugoslavia: fascinating history and sociology with a volatile mix of cultures and attitudes.

Financial Collapse - the Villains: this topic is certainly to the forefront in many minds.

Of course, if you have any other idea(s) of your own which you'd like to pursue, that's fine with us. Also, if you’re interested in co-moderating but haven’t yet come up with a topic, let me know and I’ll try to match you up.So, if you're interested and/or have any questions, contact me sooner rather than later, and I'll be glad to give or get you all the help you need. Remember that there's lots of time between now and April/May/June to do the work. And you'll learn so much in the process. Thanks,Simon PearsonChair, Fall Calendar Committee
