The Madawaska Quartet: A Free Recital

Ryerson’s Music Section and Arts and Contemporary Studies are proud to present:

The Madawaska Quartet: A Free Recital

Friday, Nov. 13, 2009
12-1pm
POD-368 (Podium Building -- area connecting Jorgenson Hall & Library Building -- enter through 350 or 380 Victoria Street, up to 3rd Floor)

Refreshments provided.

Bursting onto the Canadian music scene with a repertoire that leap-frogs across musical boundaries, and hailed for “breaking free of classical restraints,” the Madawaska Quartet performs pieces from the mainstream to performance art, from the film score to the avant-garde, and from the baroque to the present-day. With a roster of collaborators as diverse as their repertoire, they have appeared with artists such as Soprano Measha Brueggergosman, pianist Leslie Kinton, singer/songwriter Bob Wiseman, and dancer/choreographer Julia Aplin. They have performed in major international festivals such as the Festival Iberoamericano in Puerto Rico, the Festival of the Sound, the Elora Festival, the Toronto International Chamber Music Festival, New Music North, and the “Music at Port Milford” International Chamber Music Festival.

The Quartet has taught as chamber music faculty at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, where it also performed as part of the “Great Artist Series,” and has given workshops for students and emerging composers at University of Toronto, York University, and the Arraymusic Studio (where the quartet will be the first Artists-in-Residence through 2009/10). As champions of Canadian composers and their works, the quartet has premiered more than thirty new pieces, which they have since performed in festivals, cinemas, art galleries, primary schools, boats, and lecture halls throughout Ontario for audiences ranging from festival-goers to kindergarten students to undergraduates.

Recent recordings include a cd with guitarist Rob MacDonald, featuring works by Omar Daniel, Peter Sculthorpe and Christopher William Pierce.

FREE Lecture Nov.19.09 - TED BARRIS

FREE LECTURE
All LIFE members are welcome

THURSDAY, November 19, 2009
12:15 - 1 :30 p.m.
Kerr Hall East, Room 121
(you may enter Kerr Hall East through either 340 Church St or 60 Gould St)

TED BARRIS will be speaking on his new book Breaking the Silence: Untold Veterans' Stories from The Great War to Afghanistan (Thomas Allen & Sons)

This is a book that goes to the heart of veterans’ war time experiences. By sharing the stories of nearly 3000 war veterans, Barris breaks the silence that often surrounds these personal accounts. Veterans of the Great War reflect on an extraordinary first Armistice in 1918, decorated Second World War fighter pilots talk about their thirst for blood in the air, Canadian POWs explain how they survived Chinese attempts to brainwash them during the Korean War and soldiers with the Afghanistan mission talk about the horrors of the “friendly fire” incident near Kandahar.

Ted Barris is an accomplished author and broadcaster. As well as hosting stints on CBC Radio and regular contributions to the Globe and Mail and National Post, Barris has authored 15 non-fiction books and is a full-time professor of journalism at Centennial College in Toronto. His books include bestsellers: Juno: Canadians at D-Day… Days Of Victory… Behind the Glory… Deadlock In Korea and this year Victory at Vimy. He is regularly published in such periodicals as Legion, esprit de corps, 50Plus (CARP) magazine and Masthead. He has also written a weekly newspaper column - The Barris Beat - for more than 20 years. Among the awards Ted Barris has received: the international Billboard Radio Documentary Award, the Yorkton Film Festival’s Golden Sheaf, as well as numerous ACTRA nominations. In 1993, he received the Canada 125 Medal “for service to Canada and community.” In 2006, the renowned 78th Fraser Highlanders (Canadian) Regiment presented its annual excellence award, the Bear Hackle Award, to Barris to recognize his "contribution to the awareness and preservation of Canadian military history and traditions.”
