NUIT BLANCHE AT RYERSON: Light Up the Night

Campus lights up during Nuit Blanche

On the evening of Saturday Oct. 2, the Ryerson campus turns into an all-night art gallery.

City of Toronto's Scotiabank Nuit Blanche 2010 takes place from dusk until the pre-dawn hours when the city's downtown core is transformed into an artistic wonder. Ryerson's Light Up the Night Nuit Blanche participation will display installations that offer a glimpse into the creative minds and artistic visions of students, faculty and staff. As well, the Ryerson Theatre, Kerr Hall quad and 105 Bond St. will serve as venues for three independent Nuit Blanche projects.

Faculty of Communication & Design students, faculty and staff have curated five separate projects:
• At Different Angles – a multiple video installation that tours the history of communication, the evolution of different information technologies and their impact on society.
• The Swans' Lake – motorized swans decked out in tutus and ballet shoes move to the strains of Tchaikovsky.
• U-Nity at work – a video projection set against the School of Interior Design building revealing what the people inside are doing, creating a form of urban voyeurism.
• Landscapes, Cityscapes, Mindscapes: Experimental Films and Videos – using old and new media, this moving-images showcase explores the boundaries of visual culture.
• Here's Looking at You – teams of Ryerson newscasters will visit all of the Scotiabank Nuit Blanche projects, videotaping their interviews with the artists and public. The 12-hour live broadcast can be seen on Rogers Cable TV and the webcast will air on screens at the Rogers Communications Centre and at Yonge-Dundas Square on the Rogers City OmniTV screen.

Additionally in the Distillery Historic District, Ryerson's SMART (Science of Music, Auditory Research and Technology) Lab and Centre for Learning Technology partnered with the Deaf Culture Centre for an alternative music and dance performance. People can take turns in the Emoti-Chair or lay their arms in vibe-rests to feel the vibration of music.
