Mark Trusz, a local photographer,

December 3rd 2010
10:00 a.m. to 12 noon.
Location: to be confirmed.

His interest in photography spans over 40 years. Recently Mark has been instructing classes and workshops, sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm for all things photographic with people who are either new to digital photography or new to photography in general. Since 2002 Mark has been the instructor for the TDSB's "Introduction to digital photography" and "Advanced digital photography" continuing education courses http://www.tdsb.on.ca/, and offers his own workshops to small groups interested in learning more about photography outside of the classroom. Mark uses all types of cameras: Digital (Nikon, Fuji and Olympus cameras; Nikon and HP scanners) and Film (Nikon 35mm, Rollei 6x6 and 6x4.5, Various 4x5 formats), as well as most major imaging software for digital photography. Mark is Past-President of Gallery 44, a non-profit artist-run centre in Toronto, Ontario. Gallery 44 celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2000 as a leading supporter of Canadian contemporary photographic artists. Mark works primarily in black & white, and loves making personalized portraits. Mark (with the help of some of his friends) put the first version of the picturetheweb site together in 1999, and does all the maintenance and design. This latest version of the site was published in January 2007.

A Call for Winter 2010 Moderators

Here we go again.

Our Fall courses are only part-way through, and here we are talking about the Winter calendar. we are looking for people who want to be moderators or, even better, to work with one or two other people as co-moderators. Co-moderating makes the experience even more enjoyable and more relaxing. You may well already have a topic that you want to moderate, but just in case you need a little help, our curriculum and calendar committees have come up with a bunch of courses that they'd like to see running this winter,

Do any of the courses shown below catch your fancy?

Being a moderator does not necessarily mean that you have to be an expert on the topic; you just need to be enthusiastic about it. Many of these courses would work well as study groups with class members doing much of the research and presentations. What the moderators do is to plan and organize the course. You've got from now to late January - that's 3 months to get ready!

So, how about YOU? Can you help us out? Can you challenge yourself? Are you ready for a great experience? Read through our suggestions, and see if there's something there that catches your fancy.

This is our current wish list:

Of general interest:
Murders that Changed History
The Rocks Beneath the Landscape: Geology for Beginners
A History of the Blues
Digital Photography for Dummies
Great Feuds in History
Biographical Sketches: (Member presentations each week on a different figure)
Detectives in Fiction (e.g.: Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot, Perry Mason, Kinsey Milhone)
Astronomy
Comparative Religions
It's a Mystery! The Evolution of Detective Fiction
Great Trial Lawyers (e.g.: Clarence Darrow, F. Lee Bailey, Eddie Greenspan, Earl Rogers)
Through the Lens: Famous Photographers and Their Work
How Does it Work? - Recent Developments in Technology
Behind the Headlines
Feminism Redefined
Extraordinary Canadians
Key Events of the 20th Century (or the 21st)
Volcanoes: Nature's Eruptions
Dictators and Tyrants

And to complement LIFE's travel adventures, how about...
The Lives and Art of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo
The Rise and Fall of the Aztec Empire
The Russian Revolution
The Fall of Communism
Russian Folklore

Of course, if you have any other idea(s) of your own which you'd like to pursue, that's fine with us. In addition, if you're interested in co-moderating but haven't yet come up with a topic, let me know and I'll try to match you up.

So, if you're interested and/or have any questions, contact me in the next few days since deadlines are fast approaching; I'll be glad to get you all the help you need. Remember that there's lots of time between now and late January to do the work. And you'll learn so much in the process.

Thanks,
Simon Pearson
