The International Issues Discussion (IID) series at Ryerson University is pleased to present the second talk in its special Winter 2012 series, Following the Current: A Forum on Global Affairs and News Media Today.

Our guest will be John Owen, professor of international journalism at the City University in London, England. He spent over twenty years with CBC: five years as the Chief News Editor of TV News, and six years as the Chief of Foreign Bureau. He is Chairman of London’s Frontline Club, Trustee of the George Soros Open Society Foundation, and an internationally acclaimed author. Among his publications, he was co-editor and contributor to the 2008 book, International News Reporting: Frontlines and Deadlines.

Mr. Owen’s lecture is entitled "Hard News, Hard Times for the Media: Will the News Get Better?"

The event will be held Wednesday, February 1, from 6:30-8:30pm, in the George Vari Engineering and Computing Centre, room ENG 103, Ryerson University (245 Church Street, see: www.ryerson.ca/maps )

Registration begins Tuesday, December 13^th. For everyone. No exceptions.

On-line registration starts at 7 am and continues 24 hrs/day
Mail-ins will be processed during office hours only

MYTH:

· If I mail my registration to the office before December 13^th, I will be ahead of all the people registering online.

REALITY:

· No registration, regardless of when received, will be processed before December 13th

· Yes, mail-in forms will be processed in the order received… BUT paper registrations must be processed manually (which can only take place during regular office hours) – and, again, none will be processed before December 13

· The office (and all of Ryerson) will be closed from Dec.21 to Jan.3 (inclusive), thus paper mail-in registrations received during those weeks won’t be processed until January

But on the bright side, if you register on-line,

· There are no “office hours” – the website is “open” 24 hrs/day (starting December 13)

· Your registration will be recorded virtually instantly

· You will know instantly which courses you’ve secured, which are full, and for which you are waitlisted

ACT II STUDIO, a theatre program and creative drama centre for the 50+ age group in Ryerson University’s Chang School of Continuing Education is seeking a part-time office administrator/receptionist for its membership.

Terms of Employment: Contract position; approx. 15-16 hrs /wk over 3-4 days

Salary: Flexible, depending on qualifications, in the $15-20/hr range

Anticipated Start Date: ASAP but no later than January, 2012

Location: Downtown Toronto

Responsibilities

General secretarial duties including: reception, correspondence (electronic and conventional),filing, dealing with inquiries

Maintaining current database on STUDIO members and faculty and expanding/upgrading database as necessary and/or directed

Provide support to the STUDIO’s Treasurer including basic accounting, day to day banking and interacting with the university’s financial personnel

Provide support to the STUDIO’s various volunteer committees including organizing volunteers for selected administrative/clerical functions, conducting research and establishing contacts

Assist in organizing and running various STUDIO events and performances

Provide some support to the STUDIO’s Artistic Director

Skill Requirements

Minimum 2-3 years in a similar capacity

Proficiency in all Microsoft Office applications with particular skill in database management programs

Familiarity with office equipment

Ability to work independently, a self starter capable of identifying potential improvements to existing processes

Strong organizational and people skills

Prior experience working/interacting with a similar demographic group

Our guest will be Luis Horacio Najera, a well-known Mexican journalist with over twenty years’ experience covering organized crime, corruption, human rights violations, and government abuses in Latin America. Najera also served as the Public Information Officer for the General Attorney’s office in Chihuahua. In 2008 he sought exile in Canada after receiving numerous death threats following his reports on Mexican drug trafficking syndicates. He is currently the 2011-2012 CJFE/Scotiabank Massey College Journalism Fellow at the University of Toronto.

LIFE WINTER 2012 CALENDAR - Call for Moderators

Here’s your big chance. You’ve been thinking about becoming a moderator, but you’re hesitating. Well, have we got an offer for you!

We’re offering you the opportunity to moderate or co-moderate a LIFE class this winter. Why is that such a tempting offer? Because the winter session gives you the opportunity to offer either a shorter (4 or 5 weeks) or longer (6 to 10 weeks) course. And because the number of courses is lower in the winter than in the fall, you’ll have less competition from other courses!

However, you may be a little cautious about doing it on your own. If so, we’ll do our best to find a co-moderator to work with you and share everything. Or maybe you’ve met someone else in a LIFE class who would be good to work with – why not ask that person? Remember that being a moderator doesn’t mean you have to be an expert on the topic; you just need to be enthusiastic about it. Many courses work well as study groups with class members doing much of the research and presentations. What the moderators do is to plan and organize the course.

So, how about YOU? Can you help us out? Can you challenge yourself? Are you ready for a great experience? Read through our suggestions, and see what catches your fancy.

Simon Pearson is very active in LIFE, and is chair of LIFE Travels. This course enables him to combine his interests in Latin America and in social justice issues. He will be assisted by Bob Biderman, a retired teacher who has taught students of all ages. He lived in Havana, Cuba for 18 months, where he learned Spanish and taught English at Cuba's only Arts University.

Book Club: Novels of the 19th Century

• You enjoy reading those great works of literature from the 19th century and earlier that have stood the test of time

• You find that authors such as Dickens, Hugo, Tolstoy and Melville mean much more to you now than they did when you were a callow undergraduate/adolescent

• You would like a good excuse to read or re-read some of them

• You would like to share your enthusiasms, insights and questions with other like-minded LIFE members

If so, join LIFE’s newly-formed Book Club: Novels of the 19th Century, which will be starting this month. Come to our first meeting on Saturday, September 24th from 10:00 a.m. to noon; our first book is Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary.

To refresh your memory, the story focuses on a doctor's wife, Emma Bovary, who has adulterous affairs and lives beyond her means in order to escape the banalities and emptiness of provincial life. The novel was attacked for obscenity by public prosecutors, resulting in a trial that made the story notorious. After the acquittal, it became a bestseller and is now seen as one of the most influential novels ever written. (write-up freely adapted from Wikipedia!)

The book club will be meeting on the 4th Saturday of most months. You are encouraged to come to as many meetings as possible.

As you’ve probably noticed, the LIFE Institute is growing by leaps and bounds. And so, this September, there will be a new employee in the LIFE office to help Rosanne, our invaluable Office Administrator, to cope with the increasing numbers and expanding workload.
Authorized by your Board of Directors, this summer Martha Wall, Simon Pearson, and Rosanne Bernard conducted a job search, and after a series of interviews, hired LIFE Institute member Consuelo Castillo to fill a part-time position as assistant to the office administrator.

This is a part-time contract position in the office of LIFE Institute and will normally be 15 hours a week (primarily mornings). In addition, the successful candidate should have sufficient flexibility to be able to cover when the administrator is absent.

The hourly rate will be based on qualifications and experience. The contract will be for six months, with the possibility of extension.

We are seeking a person to assist the office administrator in general clerical work, such as answering the phone and handling enquiries, filing and data entry. Bookkeeping skills would be an asset.

You are outgoing, enjoy people, and have strong communication and organizational skills with attention to detail. You must have flexibility, strong proficiency with internet and email and with computer programs such as Word and Excel, and a willingness to learn new programs.

The LIFE Institute Fall 2011 Calendar will be mailed out to 2010/11 Members and Spring Guests (as well as to all those have made requests) on Tuesday, July 12th. They also will be available in the lobby of the Chang School (297 Victoria Street) beginning the week of July 18th.

It is IMPORTANT that you take note of some updates and changes regarding Fall Registration.
Please read through the following information regarding registration thoroughly and carefully.

REFUNDS:

We have made two small changes in this calendar in connection with refunds. Please think about them as you choose your courses:

1. Increase in administration charge:
The fees for every course include a non-refundable administration charge to cover our office costs for each transaction. Because these costs have risen significantly, we have had to increase this administration charge to $15. This means that if you drop a course your refund will be the course fee less $15.

2. Refund Deadlines:
The times before which you must apply for a refund have changed somewhat. They are now as noted below. You may apply for a refund of course fees before:
• the third session of a course of 7 weeks or more
• the second session of a course of 4-6 weeks
• the first session of a course of 1-3 weeks

Also, please note that if you still have any CREDIT VOUCHERS, they must be applied during this fall term. Once we move to online registration with credit card payment, vouchers will no longer apply.

ALSO

You may have heard that LIFE is moving to on-line registration. Yes, we are, but not just yet. For this Fall Calendar, we are using the same registration process as last year. This means:

• Registration will be accepted ONLY by mail.
• Full payment by cheque ONLY must accompany

your registration.
• Cash will not be accepted.
• All registrants must sign their own Course Registration Forms' Release of Liability.

Summertime Construction on Victoria Street has begun & Survey on Pedestrian Zone

Two construction projects will be taking place on Victoria St. beginning the week of June 20.

From June 23 to August 20, the northbound lane will be closed as water main work occurs between Dundas and Gerrard. For two weeks during this time, traffic entering and exiting the parking garage will be re-routed on Victoria and Gould to Yonge St. Pedestrians should exercise caution as vehicles will be travelling in both directions on Gould between Victoria and Yonge. No water interruptions are anticipated.

Renovations are also planned for the Victoria St. parking garage. Entrance and exit lanes will be angled for smoother traffic flow. If necessary, permit holders may be relocated to the Pitman Hall garage during renovations.

Survey on Ryerson University Pedestrian Zone on Gould Street for City of Toronto

The City of Toronto is evaluating the Ryerson University pilot pedestrian zone at Gould St. and Victoria St. and would like your feedback. Starting Tuesday, June 14th, Gould Street will be home to a weekly farmers’ market!

2011 - 2012 LIFE FEES

The LIFE board has approved a small increase in membership and course fees for next year, to keep pace with our increased costs for such things as lecturers' fees and necessary off-campus room rentals. The membership fee will go up by $5 to $80, and the administration fee for each course will increase by $5. We're still a bargain!

LIFE is a not-for-profit organization, but of course we need to be a not-for-loss organization. These small increases will ensure that we can continue to provide a great range of courses and other activities next fall.

New Moderators – Fall 2011

A little while ago we sent out an appeal for new moderators or co-moderators for our Fall 2011 calendar. We’ve had some good responses, which will result in a number of new courses. Right now each of the following courses has a moderator who is looking for someone to co-moderate:

Extraordinary Marriages: A chance to look at the nature of these marriages, and what made them work (or not work).

The History of Slavery: A fascinating subject, which can be approached in a number of ways. Some knowledge will help, but enthusiasm and interest matter most.

Ethical Issues in the News: A course in which the participants will discuss ethical questions arising out of news events. The co-moderator will help to keep discussion on track, and also do her or his share of research and presentation.
We are also looking for moderators (or co-moderators) for courses in these areas:

Spanish Conversation: For this course, we need someone who has an academic teaching qualification either in Spanish or in teaching a second language. The class would be at the beginner / intermediate level.

A Play-Reading Group: This just requires an enthusiasm for play-reading and some organisational ability. A good chance to lead an interesting activity.

If any of these topics or areas catches your interest, this is your chance to get involved.

The moderators are the ones who do the initial planning and organization for each course between now and late September – that’s 3 whole months to get ready! So, how about YOU? Can you help us out? Can you challenge yourself? Are you ready for a great experience?

Of course, if you have any other idea or ideas of your own which you’d like to pursue, that’s also fine with us.

So, if you’re interested and/or have any questions, contact me within the next few days, and I’ll be glad to give or get you all the help you need. Remember that there’s lots of time between now and late September to do the work. And you’ll learn so much in the process.

Shirley Lewis, Adina Lebo and Rocco Rossi are thrilled to be join us on June 3 in the afternoon to tell their stories on ‘Making a Difference’. If you have read the recent ‘Zoomer’, you will have read about Adina and her efforts to start an exciting downtown chapter of CARP.

Living in our world exposed to constant media sources, the sharing of information forms our reality. In this production class, we are looking at media arts, using inspiration of art and popular culture. Innovative approaches to short film-making will be the focus of the course. Motion will be explored in a digital environment, suing principally Adobe After Effects. Combining technical and theoretical components, this unique course will take advantage of the various shooting possibilities and cultural resources available at selected location and its surrounding areas. This course will include lectures, organized visits, technical workshops in Abobe After Effects, and critiques of student work. (Equivalent to one Professionally Related elective from Table II, see Image Arts in the Undergraduate Program Calendar.)

In this production class, innovative approaches to short filmmaking will be the focus of the course. Motion will be explored in a digital environment, using After Effects. Combining technical and theoretical components, this unique course will take advantage of various shooting locations and cultural resources available in Reykjavik and surrounding areas, during the season of twenty-four hour light. This 10 day course will include lectures, organized visits, technical workshops in After Effects and critiques of student work.

The course is taught by Ryerson Associate Professor Pierre Tremblay and Academic Coordinator James McCrorie:
Pierre Tremblay, MFA
Pierre is a Canadian-born multimedia artist who came to Ryerson after twelve years in Paris, France. His work as an artist has for more than twenty years combined new technology and photography and he is exhibited regularly in Canada and France. Pierre is an associate professor at Ryerson and has been teaching Visual Studies for the last twelve years. This course includes instruction in After Effects.
James McCrorie, BAA
James is currently the Academic Coordinator and a part-time instructor in the School of Image Arts. He manages international exchanges for the school and takes on the day-to-day events and coordination for the workshop. His teaching expertise includes digital imaging and video production.
For the course fee, you will be provided with hands-on training, accommodation, local transit, guided tours, and entrance fees. Students are required to make their own transportation arrangements to and from Reykjavik.

You attend classes and you’ve seen our moderators in action.

You recognize how much enjoyment they get out of each class and how much the class members appreciate their efforts. So you’re interested in trying it for yourself: taking the plunge and offering a course for LIFE.
Well, here are some suggestions that just might start your creative juices flowing. We think these topics would interest many of our members, and we’d love to see you moderating one of these courses for LIFE! And you don’t have to do it alone—many members give courses with a co-moderator, thus sharing the responsibility for preparation and presentation. Talk to your friends & classmates to see if they’re interested in working with you. We’ll also help you find a co-moderator.
And, don’t forget, many topics suit a study group format where participants prepare brief presentations and lead discussion. You don’t have to do all the work! And, last of all, this is a good time to get your feet wet—you have a long time, till the end of September, to prepare.

But the ideas below are only suggestions.

The Lives Lived @LIFE Project (working title)

The LIFE Institute has received a 20^th Anniversary present from The G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education, of which we are a program, at Ryerson University. The Chang School is helping us produce a short Documentary Film which highlights LIFE members and their Life Stories.

Everybody has a story to tell. We don’t often have the chance to tell our Life Stories, but now we do. If you or someone you know who is a Member of LIFE has a background experience or LIFE Story that you would like us to know about then let’s talk!

Please complete the Nomination and Consent Forms and send them to the LIFE Office by June 1^st, 2011

A group of LIFE volunteers will select a number of stories and/or experiences that will become part of our LIFE History. We’ll contact you and set up an interview and meeting with the Director of the Film.

We will continue past the Rogers Centre and the Metro Toronto Convention Centre; the tour will conclude at Maple Leaf Square and the Telus House at 15 York Street.

Spring 2011 Session >> To all potential moderators

This notice is for those of you who think you might like to volunteer to lead a class at LIFE. You’ve taken our classes yourself and discovered how much other LIFE members have enjoyed moderating their courses. Now just might be the time to try it yourself as the upcoming spring session offers you a wonderful opportunity. Why is that? In the fall and winter sessions most of our courses are full-length ones (8 or 10 weeks). But in the spring they can last from 3 weeks all the way up to 8. So, if you’ve got an idea for a course but don’t think it would fill many weeks, spring’s the time to try it.

Now, if you are reluctant to moderate on your own—well, a solution is a co-moderator who works with you and shares the responsibility. If you’d like to try that, let us know and we’ll do our best to find one for you. Or maybe you’ve met someone else in a LIFE class who would be good to work with – why not ask that person? Remember that being a moderator does not necessarily mean that you have to be an expert on the topic; you just need to be enthusiastic about it. Many courses work well as study groups with the moderators planning and organizing the course and class members doing much of the research and presentations. From now to late April—that's plenty of time to get ready!

So, how about YOU? Can you help us out? Are you ready for a great experience? Read through our suggestions and see if there's a topic that catches your fancy.

LIFE TRAVELS SURVEY

As most of you know, the LIFE Board decided this year to create a sustainable travel program for LIFE members. The committee came up with 3 very different trips to see how they went. And we scored two out of three. The Mexico trip was hit by bad publicity about safety. But the tour of Prince Edward County in September was a great success, rated very highly by all who took part. And the upcoming river cruise in Russia is well-subscribed with many enthusiastic participants.

Two out of three in the first year is pretty good, but we want to do even better in 2011/2012. So we’ve created a Travel Survey to find out what sort of travel you’re interested in, and we want you (and as many other LIFE members as possible) to complete it for us. 2011 Programs for 50 Plus

As part of our Continued Learning stream, Programs for 50 Plus introduces two new courses open to everyone and starting in January. These are part of a new unit of programming in Media Arts under Programs for 50+ . Bring your friends – you do not have to be a member of our current programming in LIFE Institute or ACT II Studio.

Women’s Stories in Documentary Film with Maureen Judge (CSPI 165)

In the series, we examine award-winning documentaries that use oral history, observational filming and personal narratives of elder women to reflect upon memory, adversity, family, and love. In each class, a selected film is screened, followed by a discussion around the questions of the role of women in the film, their stories and how these are told, and the point of view of the filmmaker.

Films include: And We Knew How To Dance, an oral history, Grey Gardens, an observational documentary, In My Mother’s Garden a personal narrative and Undying Love an oral history about finding love in the midst of unimaginable horrors.

Classes will start Monday January 17 and run through February 14th from 6:30 -9:30 pm.

Sunday Film Club with Kevin Courrier (CSPI 175)
Meeting monthly to review films you’ve seen and always wanted to discuss intelligently, the Sunday Film Club will open with the theme “Reel Politics” in an age when political discourse is at its most divisive and polarized. In an attempt to bring some nuanced debate to political dialogue and deepen our understanding of international affairs, the film club will review and discuss four major movies that tackle political realities of post 9/11, terrorism and committed activism. The Film Club will run on Sundays, Feb. 13, 27, March 13, and 27 from 2- 4pm.

To celebrate LIFE Institute’s 20th Anniversary, the Curriculum Committee is looking for members willing to be course moderators or to help plan courses reflecting the last 20 years.

Course suggestions (and perhaps you have other ideas of your own) are:

1. Freeze frame: 20 years of change captured through photography (event/ historic approach)
and/or 20 Years of Photography: From SLR to DSLR (photography technology evolution)

2. 20 Years of Music: Rock to rap and everything in-between

3. 1990-2010: Changes in science that revolutionized every day life (various categories such as technology, medicine…)

4. 20 Years of Political Change in Toronto and Ontario

5. For Better or Worse: 20 years of change (one class each: Education, Politics, Science, Arts, Religion, World Events, or other topics.)

6. 20 Years of Fashion

Courses are to be offered during the pring term from the end of April to the end of June and can be four to six sessions in length or your choice of the number of sessions.

Law and Business Professor Pnina Alon-Shenker will discuss her paper

"The Legal Duty to Accommodate Senior Workers: Nature, Scope and Limitations."

Abstract: As the Canadian workforce ages, the nature and scope of the legal duty to accommodate senior workers is becoming an increasingly topical, yet contested, issue. Despite the arguably potential undue hardship borne by employers, this paper advocates a strong senior workers' right to participate in the labour market, and consequently supports a robust duty to accommodate senior workers' disability impairments as well as age-related needs. At the same time, the paper identifies several factors, such as proximity to retirement and the availability of pension benefits, which might be relevant when determining the scope of this duty on a case-by-case basis.

It is with great regret that we inform you of the sudden passing of Dr. Diana Knight, a Programs for 50 Plus Instructor who has taught many courses in English literature for the LIFE Institute. Diana has taught in LIFE Institute since Fall 2005 and her courses have been wide ranging, full of fun and deep with discussion -- she would have loved this alliteration! She was extremely creative in her choice of themes and novels, short stories, poetry , even film, music and food to illustrate and deepen one's analysis of the topic.

Dr. Knight took early retirement from the Halton District School Board where she was Program Services Coordinator of English, Media, Dramatic Arts and Libraries. Diana was passionate about her work and enjoyed the opportunity to provide professional development for English teachers - from demonstrating ways to integrate traditionally studied titles with contemporary texts, enhancing the study of literature with writers from diverse English speaking cultures, demonstrating how literature can be explored for political, cultural, sociological issues to how to encourage students to become discerning readers and thinkers.

Diana more than demonstrated this ability in all her classes at LIFE Institute and she developed a loyal group of students who automatically signed up for her course as soon as it appeared! She had a wicked smile and a wicked way with words.......she loved to mix and match genres, texts, film, music and theatre. She was an enthusiastic audience at ACT II STUDIO performances and the Silver Screens Arts Festivals. She was an avid traveller and just came back from several semesters of teaching English as a second language in China. Her last comment to me was that she thought she might have one more stint left in her for this exciting task.

Above all, Diana was the ultimate later life learner. She explored, she challenged herself and her ideas, she shared her thoughts and then expected her students to stretch and share as well. She took her PhD as a part time adult student just before her retirement. Later life learning was her mantra and she loved teaching at Ryerson University because she said it was a university that truly believed and demonstrated educational opportunity for everyone.

Diana's course this semester for LIFE Institute was "Latin America: Stories, Samba and Salsa" and in honour of their instructor, the students have determined that they will continue on with the class
.........they know Diana would have wanted them to do so.

At this time we know that there will not be a funeral but we will let you know about a planned memorial service in the future.
