MANAGING TRANSITIONS: CSRP 101

Programs for 50+ Presents
Managing Transitions: Life After 50 (CSRP 101)
Building Your Personal Legacy

As we mature, we begin to feel the need for change in our lives. In almost all cases, people want to live the legacy phase of their lives to the fullest – learning from and making the most of everything that has come before. Some of us may want to change our jobs or embark on entirely new careers. Others want to travel the world, contributing time and expertise wherever they are.

Starting a new life phase is not easy. It requires reflection, planning, and action. In the Managing Transitions: Life After 50 workshop, participants will identify the direction their lives will take and come away with a goal-based plan to make their dreams for the legacy phase of their lives come true.

Discussion topics include: understanding transitions; coping with change; finding your life-work; intellectual, physical, emotional, social, and spiritual well being; giving back to communities; and creating a personal legacy statement. Participants will take away a personal guided journal for designing the legacy phase of life.

Spring 2010 Calendar - Call for Moderators

Maybe you’ve thought a little about becoming a moderator, but you’re hesitating.

Well, here’s your big chance.

We’re planning now for the spring session, and it’s the spring session that gives you the opportunity to try something new. Why is that? In the fall and winter sessions most of our courses are full-length ones (8 or 10 weeks). But in the spring they can be anything from 3 weeks all the way up to 10. So, if you’ve got an idea for a course but you don’t see it filling 10 weeks, the spring’s the time to try it.

Also, if you’re thinking about moderating but you’re a little cautious about exposing yourself on your own, what you need is a co-moderator to work with you and share everything. So, tell us that you want a co-moderator, and we’ll do our best to find one for you. Or maybe you’ve met someone else in a LIFE class who would be good to work with – why not ask that person? Remember that being a moderator does not necessarily mean that you have to be an expert on the topic; you just need to be enthusiastic about it. Many of these courses would work well as study groups with class members doing much of the research and presentations. What the moderators do is to plan and organize the course. You’ve got from now to late April - that's plenty of time to get ready!

So, how about YOU? Can you help us out? Can you challenge yourself? Are you ready for a great experience? Read through our suggestions, and see if there's something there that catches your fancy. This is our current wish list:

Anything that appeals to you

*Haiti – the causes of the problems + the solutions?
*The work of one specific artist
*Great feuds in history
*Astronomy
*How does it work? – Recent developments in technology
*Islam
*Extraordinary Canadians
*Psychology – any aspect (e.g. Jung and the unconscious)
*Immigration – politics, psychology, experiences
*The physiology of aging
*Women who’ve made a difference in Canada
*The blues – History and development

*Languages – we’re looking for people to moderate language courses in the spring, either at beginner level or higher. But for this we need qualified, experienced teachers. If that’s you, let us know.

Anything else that appeals to you! - If you have any other idea(s) of your own which you'd like to pursue, or which you’d like to discuss, that's fine.

In addition, if you’re interested in co-moderating but haven’t yet come up with a topic, let me know and I’ll try to match you up.So, if you're interested and/or have any questions, contact me as soon as possible, and certainly no later than 20 February, as we have a deadline for the actual calendar entries. I'll be glad to give or get you all the help you need. Remember that there will be lots of time between now and late April to do the actual work on the course. And you'll learn so much in the process.

Thanks, Simon Pearson
for the Spring Calendar Committee

ACT II Studio - Melodrama

MELODRAMA comes to ACT II STUDIO with its presentation of two works, one representing the golden age of the genre and the other its excesses … and fun

THE POOR OF NEW YORK by Dion Boucicault dramatizes the travails of a good family brought low to extreme poverty by the depression of 1857 and the machinations of an unscrupulous banker. Like many melodramas of the mid-1800s, it takes a swipe at the greedy mercantile class and has an underlying intention to spur social action against the causes of poverty

BECAUSE THEIR HEARTS WERE PURE written by Morland Cary in 1941 during a brief resurgence of Melodrama (a great draw at the box office) has all the classic elements of what we now associate with the genre … a villain, virtuous heroine, an array of victims and colourful characters, a noble hero and – of course – several cliffhanging moments

These entertaining, and one might almost say curiously “timely”, plays have been adapted and directed by ACT II STUDIO’S Artistic Director, Vrenia Ivonoffski; produced and portrayed by its students

Performances are at RYERSON THEATRE SCHOOL, 44 Gerard St. E (2nd Fl), Toronto (wheelchair access; elevators unavailable). Each play runs approx. 90 mins.

Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010:
2 pm BECAUSE THEIR HEARTS WERE PURE
7 pm THE POOR OF NEW YORK

Friday, Feb. 19, 2010:
2 pm THE POOR OF NEW YORK
7 pm BECAUSE THEIR HEARTS WERE PURE

Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010
